YMCA Swimming Lessons are designed to teach your child to be happy, active and safer in the water.

How do YMCA Swimming Lessons work?

  • Lessons run for 30 minutes once a week over 40 weeks each year.
  • All of our teachers are fully AUSTSWIM qualified
  • We run lessons 7 days per week so we can find a time to fit your busy schedule.
  • Children progress through 12 levels as their skills develop and are grouped based on age and ability.
  • Children in our direct debit program have full access to the pool outside of lesson times.

YMCA Swimming Lessons for Children

Skill development and water safety knowledge begins at an early age. Children from 6 months of age explore and become familiar with aquatic environments.

In the infant program, a parent supports the child in the pool to assist the learning process and help build confidence.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Breath control and blowing bubbles
  • Floating, paddling and propulsion
  • Familiarity with water over the face and head.

Infant swimming lessons are held at a range times, six days a week.

Aquatic awareness and survival skills are essential for all children. You and your child will be introduced to water in a playful and secure environment.

Children in the preschool years grow in confidence and ability as they develop their water safety skills.

In the preschool program, children become more independent in the water.

Parents are gradually transitioned out of the pool and children start to participate on their own.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Body orientation skills
  • Personal and water safety skills
  • Propulsion and submersion
  • Introduction to stroke development

The preschool aquatic program develops water safety skills in a fun environment where children also develop socially and physically.

School Aged Children

With an increase in confidence, competence and endurance, children aged 5 – 12 establish a lifelong appreciation for safer activity in the water. The primary program focuses on physical, intellectual and personal development.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Development and refinement of stroke
  • Safe and sensible decision making and problem solving in and around water
  • Personal survival skills
  • Cooperation and respect for others in an aquatic environment.

Teachers assess and progress children through the program based on individual ability. The primary swimming program develops water safety skills in a fun environment where children also develop socially and physically.

We also offer an intensive five-day school holiday program, and our squad programs provide a great introduction to the sport of competitive swimming and training.

Swimming Lessons for people with special needs

Our swimming lessons offer classes for participants who are:

  • Intellectually and/or physically challenged, disabled or handicapped
  • Older adults
  • Assessed as requiring a special needs program
  • From a multi-cultural background.

Classes may take the following form:

  • One-to-one classes
  • A specifically designed group class with a maximum ratio of one teacher to four participants
  • As part of a ‘mainstream’ group class with a carer to assist, under direction from an aquatic education teacher.

Cost

Our swimming lesson rates are fair and flexible, and are charged fortnightly via direct debit from your bank account or credit card. Enrolment also includes before and after-class access to the pool for your child and family.

Group Fitness

Being active is a great way to keep us in shape; in body, mind and spirit. There are many ways that we can help get you active and into a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Group Fitness classes can provide both a cardio and strength training workout –  it might be a low impact weights class for older adults; a rehabilitation session for a back injury or a higher intensity class.

Exercising in a group is fun, motivational and the instructor will encourage you to develop your fitness in a safe and enjoyable environment.
