the Y
ReCranked is a Y Ballarat initiative specialising in giving unwanted bikes new riders. We take old, unused, broken or forgotten bikes and revamp them into safe and serious modes of transport.
Donated bikes are given a complete overhaul in the ReCranked team in our workshop. ReCranked bikes are available for new owners who also receive bike care, maintenance education and a brand-new helmet, to ensure a lasting and happy friendship.
While many bikes can be available at no cost, the team have a good supply of second-hand bikes available for sale or via donation.
Having a way to get around is so important for anyone, especially young people. Delivering practically new bikes to people is a creative and realistic way to improve transport options for Ballarat residents.
ReCranked bikes have been used in local school bike education programs and sent to countries including Cambodia, Liberia and Namibia.
How you can help:
ReCranked Volunteers
Whilst volunteer spots are limited, from time to time we do welcome new volunteers ReCrankers. The volunteer recruitment process includes an interview and if recruited, must complete induction and have a Volunteer Working With Children Check.
ReCranked’s History
Y Ballarat, with City of Ballarat and Department of Planning & Community Development officially launched ReCranked in April 2013, with presentation of the Y’s first 15 newly recycled bikes to local agencies, who found new owners in the Ballarat area.
