ReCranked

ReCranked is currently running with skeleton staff. We are still open Monday, Wednesday & Fridays but have limited capacity to respond to phone/email enquiries. If you are after a bike, please visit the workshop during open hours. We are still accepting bike donations but are not able to collect at this time. We will gratefully accept any bikes donations (that are salvageable) to the workshop during open hours.

ReCranked is a Y Ballarat initiative specialising in giving unwanted bikes new riders. We take old, unused, broken or forgotten bikes and revamp them into safe and serious modes of transport.

Donated bikes are given a complete overhaul in the ReCranked team in our workshop. ReCranked bikes are available for new owners who also receive bike care, maintenance education and a brand-new helmet, to ensure a happy lasting friendship.

While many bikes can be available at no cost, the team have a good supply of second-hand bikes available for sale or via donation.

Having a way to get around is so important for anyone, especially young people. Delivering practically new bikes to people is a creative and realistic way to improve transport options for Ballarat residents.

ReCranked bikes have been used in local school bike education programs and sent to countries including Cambodia, Liberia and Namibia.

How you can help:

  • Bring in your old or unused bike for recycling
  • Make a donation to Recranked when you secure a bike to help us purchase helmets and workshop supplies
  • Tell people about ReCranked and the difference it makes – thanks!

ReCranked Volunteers
Whilst volunteer spots are limited, from time to time we do welcome new volunteers ReCrankers. Recruitment includes an interview and if recruited, an induction and requirement for a Volunteer Working with Children Check.

ReCranked’s History
Y Ballarat, City of Ballarat and Department of Planning & Community Development officially launched ReCranked in April 2013, with presentation of the Y’s first 15 newly recycled bikes to local agencies, who found new owners in the Ballarat area.
Since its creation, ReCranked has recycled over 3,000 bikes!

ReCranked in Schools Program
ReCranked in Schools builds core skills such as confidence and team work for young people experiencing vulnerability or disengagement from learning, is strength-based and focuses on making learning fun.

The Y acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures; and to Elders past, present and future.
