Jumping towards an automotive future

February 15, 2024 Youth Empowerment

As the term commenced, the Jump Start team excitedly welcomed a new practice vehicle to the workshop and fondly waved goodbye to the old Camry, which has been with the program since its inception.

The automotive program, which is designed to build engagement and confidence, continues to evolve and provide new hands-on experiences. Term-based, it allows young people aged 14-24 the opportunity to gain skills, meet others and develop positive peer relationships.

A qualified mechanic guides and supports young people to learn at their own pace, while a youth worker is also in the workshop at all times.

“We aim to give our participants as close to a real workshop experience as we can. Having an updated vehicle makes a big difference as this has newer features such as on-board diagnostic capability. This means young people can practice using diagnostic tools, something you’ll find in every modern automotive workplace,” explained the program’s mechanic, Brendan Hewitt.

“We find that providing these experiences means that young people have more confidence and are better prepared when they take the next step – whether this is an apprenticeship, a work placement or continuing with education.”

Louise Rippon, Jump Start Facilitator, reflected warmly on just how many valuable learning opportunities the 2002 Toyota had provided, “It’s had its wiper blades checked and exchanged countless times, its oil changed weekly, various parts dismantled and re-assembled, hundreds of spark plug removals and replacements and over 650 tyre changes! We also have many happy memories of participants chatting and working together under its bonnet.”

“It will be great to have two different cars in the workshop for this term’s group to work on, alongside other vehicles,” she added. “We’re looking forward to Jump Start in 2024, which has had such strong interest – the groups are full again this term.

It really can create such positive change in a young person’s life. We continually hear from participants that the program provides them a sense of belonging, an opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment and invaluable work and life skills.”
