The sixth Y Ballarat Youth Art Exhibition was bigger than ever before. Taking place much earlier this year, it launched with a celebratory event in Barkly Square on April 19 and closed at the end of the month. Attracting 60+ young creatives with 86 artworks across diverse mediums exhibited.
Several Awards were presented by Y Ballarat CEO, Craig Mathieson, and artist judge, Tania Babic.
At the exhibition conclusion, 215 votes for the “People’s Choice Award” were counted with Kaitlyn Button with her piece “Threaded” attracting the largest number of votes”.
Several young people were integral to planning activities of the Opening Night. From MC-ing, judging artwork, music, delivering the Acknowledgement of Country, and setting up the Exhibition, their contributions were invaluable and truly reflect the Y’s focus on empowering young people.
Exhibition organiser, Lilia Haughie from Y Ballarat Youth, said, “We’d like to extend our congratulations to this year’s award winners and warmly thank the young artists who contributed to the exhibition, which was truly inspirational. We heard so many comments from visitors admiring the talent and marvelling at the skill and creativity in the execution of these artworks.” Lilia, added, “The Art Exhibition encourages creativity among young people, while offering opportunities for recognition within the local community. I am so proud of every young person who was brave enough to show their art to the world!
It’s always such a thrill to see the works coming in, read the stories behind the pieces and meet the artists. While this year’s exhibition is over, I’m already thinking of next year’s and how we can expand and incorporate more art.”
