Belonging, Excellence, Honesty, Nurturing, Respect

Belonging means feeling safe, accepted, and valued for who you are, and knowing you have a place in the community.
Belonging is fostered by creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and included, where each person’s background, identity, and needs are respected, and where no one is left out, ignored, or made to feel unsafe.
It also means challenging behaviours that exclude or isolate others, use language or actions that cause emotional harm, or which fail to recognise cultural and individual differences, as these undermine our sense of community.

Excellence means always doing our best, learning from experience and aiming to grow and improve every day.
Aspiring to excellence involves embedding and following safeguarding practices to protect and support others. It is about striving for quality and continually improving through reflection, up-to-date practices, and personal learning.
Excellence also requires challenging behaviours that disregard child safety procedures, ignore feedback for improvement, or reflect only the bare minimum effort. Such behaviours limit growth and learning and may create unsafe environments.

Honesty means telling the truth, being clear and open and doing the right thing even when it’s hard.
It means speaking the truth, sharing concerns openly and acting with integrity to keep everyone safe. It also means admitting mistakes, taking responsibility, reporting unsafe behaviour and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.
Hiding information about risks or concerns, covering up mistakes, lying, or engaging in behaviours that put a child’s safety at risk or damage trust and teamwork should be challenged.

Nurturing means supporting and encouraging each person to grow, learn, and be their best.
It encourages others and helps them to feel valued and supported. It contributes to building confidence and feelings of being valued. It’s essential for children and young people to grow, feel safe and reach their full potential.
Nurturing others means recognising and challenging behaviours which are impatient, unkind or unsupportive of others. Additionally, actions that disregard a child’s feelings and needs, may damage their trust and wellbeing and growth.

Respect means treating everyone with fairness, kindness and understanding, no matter their background or beliefs.
Respect encompasses listening to others, speaking kindly, and treating every person’s culture, voice, and rights with dignity and care. It also means honoring personal boundaries, valuing different opinions, and acting fairly without judgement of others. Respect requires that children feel safe and heard.
Behaviours which judge people for their background or beliefs, show a lack of care or consideration, or dismiss a child’s concerns leading to them feeling unsafe or unheard, should be challenged.
