Y School Ballarat announcement: We’re re-defining Sturt St!

August 7, 2026 Inspired Young People

We’re re-defining Sturt St!

Y Ballarat is re-developing the building at 1315 Sturt Street into an exciting new concept which will change the face of education in Ballarat.

The education dynamic is changing. Y Ballarat understands not everyone learns in the same way, and that external factors can impact the ability to learn. We’re creating a different kind of educational space, for different kinds of learners.

Y School Ballarat will provide an independent educational opportunity, where everyone has a voice, and where educators and learners work together to create their future success.

Based on successful models in use in Victoria, WA, South Australia and Queensland, Y School Ballarat will also draw on the values of Y Ballarat – belonging, excellence, honesty, nurturing and respect – ensuring these are at the heart of everything we do and central to how we shape the learning environment for our students to achieve.

Programs will be available to years 11 and 12 (aged 16-20) learners who wish to complete the VCE Vocational Major (VM), but in a trauma-informed, people-first environment, with expansion to other year levels over the coming years.

Acting CEO of Y Ballarat, Barbara Elvin said “Y School Ballarat will create a supportive environment which brings together teachers and youth workers in each class to guide and encourage our learners and help them develop skills in resilience and perseverance while they further their education.”

“Our learners will feel heard, valued, supported and have ownership of their learning journey and educational outcomes.”

“Beyond the classroom, our learners will gain real-life skills that will help them to go onto future education or employment.”

Y School Ballarat will partner with groups across the broader community, providing the opportunity for learners to gain life-skills and make a meaningful contribution to their community through real actions and achievements.

The school is expected to open to its first cohort of students in Term 1, 2027 pending registration. Recruitment for a Principal to lead the school is underway.

The Y acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures; and to Elders past, present and future.
